The aim of the Making PEDs project is not only to research and plan Climate Neutral PEDs but also to facilitate the transition into
practice providing Digital Twins as a means to support decision-making and participatory urban transformation processes.
Specifically, as key elements in PEDs, research on assessment frameworks, 3D cityGML-based methods and tools will focus on:
• Holistic assessment towards Climate Neutral PEDs;
• Reliable prediction of potential sustainability and business scenarios on Large-Scale energy retrofitting actions of the building stock;
• Impact of Citizen Energy Communities (CECs).

- The most direct impact of the project will be in the 4 demo cities where decision-making processes to transform urban areas towards Climate Neutral PEDs will be engaged. The methods and tools developed within the project will be tested in a participatory and co-creation environment in the form of Urban Living Labs in the four cities participating in the project. The Making PEDs project will provide a very significant contribution towards the EU aim of a 30 % cut in its annual primary energy consumption by 2030. Estimated primary energy balance for the demo Districts in a BAU scenario in 2030 is compared in next figure with the situation in the same year following a regeneration towards PED strategy. The average primary energy reduction is 66%. Calculations estimate the different share of old buildings (renovated and not renovated) and new buildings and on-site RES generation in urban spaces as well as in buildings in each of the ULLs.

Developed digital twins and models will be tested and refined while supporting decision-making processes for the regeneration of four districts in Europe aiming to climate neutrality, acting as Urban Living Labs. The use of CityGML standard will guarantee replicability, thus benefits of Making PEDs outcomes will impact to other areas in Europe beyond the participant countries.
